What's Happened to Your Skin Over the Years?

What's Happened to Your Skin Over the Years?

Some things get better with time. Wine and friendships age beautifully. But your skin? Not so much.

As you get older, changes that happen in your body take a toll on your skin. You might have noticed new or deepening wrinkles, thinning lips, or sagging skin. Fortunately, you’re not stuck with any of those changes.

At Revive Health and Wellness in Norwell, Massachusetts, Stephanie Sylvester, RN, and Craig Sylvester, MD, offer Botox® and fillers to reverse the changes that occur in your skin over the years. At the same time, we want to help you understand what’s happening and why. So let’s look at the specifics.

Thinner, more fragile skin

Over the years, your skin loses resilience. Your epidermis — the outermost layer of your skin — gets thinner. This contributes to the volume loss that can cause deeper folds, sunken cheeks, under-eye bags, and other cosmetic issues.

It also makes it easier to get tears or abrasions in your skin, so be cautious as you exfoliate. Avoid picking at anything on your skin, too.

At the same time, the walls of your blood vessels get thinner, making your skin easier to bruise.

Collagen and elastin loss

Your skin relies on two proteins called collagen and elastin to maintain its support structure and its suppleness. Over time, though, your body makes less of these proteins. In fact, after you turn 20, your body makes about 1% less collagen each year.

This leads to skin with more slack and more wrinkles. This is where Botox and fillers can come in. With fillers, we can replace the volume loss that you get through the years, restoring the youthful contours of your face. With Botox, we can smooth the wrinkles that form because of repeated facial expressions, like the frown lines that develop between your eyebrows.

Increased dryness

Dryer skin can be one of the most annoying issues that increase with age. Through the years, you lose oil and sweat glands, which contribute to dryness and itchiness.

When you think of youthful skin, you probably imagine someone with a glowing complexion. If dryness is getting in the way of your glow, talk to our team about a HydraFacial®. Not only does this facial allow us to clear away dead and damaged cells from the surface of your skin, but it also gives us the opportunity to infuse your skin with a high-quality moisturizing serum. This 30-minute treatment can help you defy the dryness that often comes with aging.

Ultimately, getting older brings about a lot of changes in your skin. But we have ways to combat them to help you look and feel your best through the years. To get a game plan to care for your skin, call us or request an appointment online today.
